Brasov, situated at the foot of the Tampa Mountain, is one of Romania's main tourist centers. The old center of the city (Council Sq.), flanked by Renaissance - style, baroque and neo-classical buildings, is dominated by the celebrated Black Church (1384-1477), the largest gothic construction in Romania, and with a facade adorned by numerous stone carvings. The interior of this church conceals many treasures: 15 th century murals painted in the renaissance style, more than a 100 oriental carpets, and a 4000 pipe organ, thought to be the largest in Europe. The Bartholomew Church (13 century) is in the early gothic style.

Many of the fortifications of the mediaeval city of Brasov have been preserved; sections of the city wall, the Ecaterina Gate, the Butcher's Tower, the Black Tower, and the Weavers, Ropers, Furriers, Clothiers and Blacksmiths Bastions.

The area around Brasov is one of the most visited tourist destination in Romania. From here, you can set off on excursions to the Fagaras, Rupea and Rasnov Castles and the mediaeval castles at Bran, Racos and Hoghiz.

The mountain resort of Poiana Brasov, above which looms the Postavaru Massif, is just 12 km away from Brasov. Winter sports enthusiasts will find numerous ski slopes here.
