Cluj-Napoca is a genuinely European city. Always open to the new, Cluj has kept pace with the times. It is one of the most important cultural centers of Romania. Here there are nine institutes of higher education, with 49 faculties and numerous research institutes.

The history of Cluj, like that of other Transylvanian cities, goes back far in time. The former Dacian citadel of Napoca became, during Roman domination, a municipium and then colonia. In 1316 it gained the status of civitas. Of the fortifications built after 1407, the Firemen's and Builders' towers have been preserved, as well as the Bastions of the Tailors, clothiers and Cobblers, fragments of the defensive wall and the fortified citadel.

The center of the city is dominated by the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Michael, built in the gothic style during the 14 th and 15 th centuries, with an eighty-meter neo-gothic tower constructed in the 19 th century. Nearby, there is a large statue of Matei Corvin on horseback, made in 1902 by artist Janos Fadrusz.

Cluj has a long list of tourist attractions. The traveler will require a number of days to see all that the city has to offer: the Church of the Benedictine Monastery (1222), the Manastur-Calvaria Church (13 th century); the Reformed Church (1486-1494), in front of which there is an equestrian statue of St. George slaying the dragon, sculpted in 1373 by Martin and Gheorghe; the Jesuits Church, the Orthodox Cathedral, with a cupola inspired by that of Hagia Sophia; the baroque palace that belonged to count Banffy (1773-1785), which houses the Cluj Museum of Art; the Teleki Palace, built in the neo-classical style between 1790 and 1795; the National Theatre and Romanian Opera, inaugurated in 1919; the Council Palace; the 15 th century house of Matei Corvin; the house where Franz Listz lived in 1846; the Babes-Bolyai University; the Botanical Gardens; the open -air Ethnographic Museum on Hoia Hill; and much more.
