Constanta, the ancient Greek colony of Tomis (7 th century BC), is Romania's largest Black Sea port. The current name of the city was adopted in the 4 th century AD after the Emperor Constantine built a district here - named Constantiniana. From Roman times, there have been preserved an emporium, with an impressive polychrome mosaic, preserved intact for a surface area of 2000 sq meters the Genoese established a colony in Constanta in the 13 th century. They built a lighthouse here, which can still be seen today.

During the reign of Carol I, the port was modernized by engineer Anghel Saligny. In the same period, numerous hotels were built, as well as the imposing Art Nouveau Casino (1909).

It is impossible not to fall under the spell of Constanta's cosmopolitan atmosphere. Here we can find mosques in the Moorish style, Armenian churches, and Bulgarian and Greek Churches.
